The UC Quake Centre is proud to partner with –

Auckland Council.

The Auckland Council is committed to a partnership with the UC Quake Centre to help improve community resilience in Christchurch, and throughout New Zealand, following the devastation of the Canterbury Earthquakes.

The UC Quake Centre’s mission is 'inspired by New Zealand’s need, as highlighted by the Canterbury earthquakes, to better understand and mitigate our seismic risks and to develop skills, knowledge and solutions that create resilient communities.'

While there is considered to be less of an earthquake risk in Auckland, the city is however built on the dormant Auckland Volcanic Field and is also threatened by ash fall from possible eruptions elsewhere in the North Island. So there are still lessons to be learned from the Canterbury Earthquakes for the City of Sails, in the management of risk from natural hazards.

The Auckland Council has an important role to play to assist in building a city that is resilient to the effects of natural hazards ranging from the organisation and use of information to the way potential risks are assessed and treated.

To co-ordinate research to effectively reduce risk and increase resilience for Auckland communities, the Council has put in place The Natural Hazard Risk Management Action Plan (NHRMAP). The NHRMAP initiative has also been established to avoid duplication of effort and cost in research and information gathering.

With a goal towards making Auckland ‘the world’s most liveable city,’ the Council is proud to be taking action to improve the city’s resilience and also proud to partner with the UC Quake Centre, to better understand how to improve disaster recovery and reconstruction.
