A rapidly expanding need for geotechnical experience in Christchurch following the earthquakes, saw solution savvy ENGEO contact the UC Quake Centre to help the industry as a whole. The increasing challenge was to get junior staff ‘up to speed’ more quickly with internal training andprofessional development. Their suggestion to the University of Canterbury was to run training courses on basic soil mechanics, with individual consultancies making one presentation each.
The successful end result was a series of five presentations run each week. Four other local geotechnical consultancies agreed to be involved, presenting lectures that covered: soil classification and properties, soil mechanics, field investigations, liquefaction assessment, and foundations.
ENGEO are proud that they took a lead role to foster this sort of collaborative approach to professional development within the industry and look forward to continuing their working partnership with UC Quake Centre.
